Thursday, 18 April Suicide. I know I said I wouldn’t be posting on this blog but there are things that, occasionally, I want to say. And today, it is about suicide. It scares people — both those who are not suicidal, and those who are. When I am suicidal or have suicidal ideation, as it is more benignly phrased by psychiatrists although it all comes down to the same thing; you want to die I call a friend, who I met in the loony bin, ten years ago. We have been close ever since, not bound through mental illness, but simply because we love each other. Anyway, I call him, sobbing that I want to die.
Sally Brampton: come on over to my place
Please refresh the page and retry. Sally drowned after walking into the sea near her home, at St Leonards on Sea, on May For people like me, who met Sally when she was the launch editor of Elle, a job she nabbed at only 30 , such a tragic demise could never have been predicted. She was a warm, intelligent, fiercely loyal woman and I, like all of her staff, adored working with her, and the crazy after-work fashion parties she got us into. She had our backs, and we had hers.

When can I see you? That’s the last email my friend Sally Brampton sent to me and I still can’t believe I’ll never get another, because Sally took her own life, on her own terms, early last Tuesday morning – while the rest of us were asleep and she yearned to be. I moved house not long ago – just another half-mile further along from Sally’s place on the East Sussex coast in St Leonards-on-Sea – but, nonetheless, she hadn’t been here yet.
Described by former colleagues as ‘smart, tough and stylish’, Sally Brampton pictured was a fashion writer and leading advice columnist who wrote candidly about her battle with depression. I was desperate to show her my new garden; she is – damn, was – enviably green-fingered and I knew she’d love it. She’d missed my book launch in April, sending me a text to explain why: that damn ‘black dog’ of depression was snapping at her heels again.
Sally had suffered from severe depression for over two decades. She was very open about it, turning her suffering into a memoir, Shoot The Damn Dog – a characteristically unflinching look at the illness from her own eloquent perspective.
Sally Brampton: I want to end my relationship with my bipolar boyfriend
The Problem My boyfriend told me on our first date he was bipolar, to give me time to think if I wanted to get into a relationship. His ups and down were minor, and he was so honest and attentive that I felt hugely loved, but decided it was kinder to end the relationship, as he was talking about marriage and I wasn’t ready to commit. Then he had a catastrophic psychotic episode due to wrong medication and was sectioned.

In the past decade, I have made two gardens — not including the gardens I have made for friends. It is my most passionate hobby so, short of moving house in order to obtain a new garden, I offer to make one for people I love. For me, a garden is a consuming relationship so I only do so for people who cherish me and, in return, will cherish their garden. However, it is with my own garden that I have the most passionate relationship. Both the gardens I made for myself started as a wilderness of overgrown trees and shrubs and tired, patchy lawns.
The first was feet long by 35 feet wide, large by urban standards. I worked around the existing trees, laying wide paths a path must be at least five feet wide to accommodate two people strolling along it and ripping out the exhausted grass, which never thrives under a canopy of leaves. Lawns hate trees; they need wide open spaces to flourish. I love trees, not simply for their beauty but because every garden needs both a vertical and a horizontal aspect to achieve the beauty of nature.
